What every garden needs

It's that time of year again. Yep, we have been finding floaters in the bay. By floaters, I mean dead horseshoe crabs. They bob around in the waves . Over the years we have enjoyed scooping them out on an oar and bringing them back to the back yard where we place them in the flowerbeds to dry up and finish their rotting process. Sounds gross huh! Sometimes they are stinky, especially if they had not been dead and floating around for that long when we find them. You can always tell they are fresh when they ooze forever when you scoop them out of the water. Luckily the two that I found this week were dead for quite a while and they were not as stinky. I figure I will leave them in the flower bed all summer and they will be ready to ship off to some unsuspecting kid this fall. They are a fun thing to donate to a schools science lab too. Especially in land locked areas. You know you want one....admit it! lol.

AJ~lol, they kind of do, don't they!

Lucy~ They didn't make me sick. I never even touched them with my hands, just the oar. I'm a pro at it too.

Oh. Mah. GAW.

I've seen some disturbing things before, but man, Netter, this is right up with The Most Disturbing Stuff I've Ever Seen.

You, um, say you send these to people?

Hmmm...

When I was little, I had a book about Science that was illustrated by Charles Schultz, so the whole book was full of Peanuts characters.

One part of the book was on horseshoe crabs and I would read it over and over again. I was mesmerised by them! But I never saw one in real life.

Then my dad retired to the beaches of Florida and about 9 years ago I saw a horseshoe crab for the first time ever. And I was just as taken with them in real life as I was when I was a child, in the landlocked suburbs of Southwest Chicago.

I loved this post Netters. Really really enjoyed it.

Marianne, Do you want one? When they dry up, I can send you one for your china hutch...lol. Ok, nobody would put one in their china hutch but you could keep it in the garage.

Danielle's science teacher just loved it when I donated the one Danielle won to her. It is in her cabinet at school.

I love them and think they are the neatest things out there. It is cool you can find them and have tehm around like that. Do you have names for them?

No thank you Netters. I don't need you to send me one. I have to go to Florida this year and introduce Shark to my dad. You know, since we are getting married and all. My dad still doesn't even know I am engaged. Yikes.

And as it turns out, Shark and I may be sleeping on the beach among the horseshoe crabs, depending upon how my dad takes the news.....

Yup, I remember dead horseshoe crabs when we used to go to Long Island every summer. Of course, we were kids and would throw them all over the place. Now, I'm beyond grossed out and don't think I would get near one.
