Don't forget about this...

Today she would have been 92.

Yeppers, today would have been my Grandmother's birthday, so, I thought I would put a little something, something, on my blog for her. It seems strange that I was just at her funeral a month ago. Anyway, I'm going to type what was on the back of her memorial card from her funeral and I'll add a few of my memories as I go. It's going to be a mish-mosh of facts and random blabbering. Hey, it's what I'm known for. I have to do this quick so I'm sure it will be loaded with typos. Ignore them...I know I have told you this before. Anyway, here we go...
Martha Arvelia (Vogt) Slater passed away on Sunday, March 8th at the age of 91 years. She was born April 8, 1916 at Courtney Missouri, the youngest child of Charles Sr. and Olga Johanna Caroline (Frahm) Vogt. Her Father (my Great Grandfather) passed away at the age of 34 from the Spanish Influenza of 1918. Grandma often remarked that she remembered sitting and playing on her Father's bed while he was ill. Funny side story about the first picture. The writing on the back of the picture said, "The Baby holding a baby pig. It now weighs 100 pounds." We had a good chuckle over that as we wondered whether Great Grandma Olga meant the Baby weighed 100 lbs or the pig.}
In 1919, at the age of 3, she moved with her Mother and siblings to Liberty, Nebraska. They rode the train up and she remembered her oldest brother Charlie running to the front of the train so he could be the first to be in Nebraska. Her Uncle Siegfried Frahm, made a home for the family. { Second photo, Right to Left: Charles Jr, Amelia, Nevora, Marvin, Martha Vogt} Martha attended three different country schools, graduating 8th grade from Distirct 76. She attended Lincoln High School in Lincoln Nebraska, graduating in June of 1936. She often told me how she used to rollerskate to High School, right past the Nebraska State Capital Building. She was also a HUGE Nebraska Football fan and would go to the games and watch from the old knot-hole section.
{ Third Picture: If you know my sister, you will see how much Tisha and our Grandma Martha looked alike. It's really remarkable. I can't even tell you how many people made comments at the funeral about their resemblance. We had a display of old pictures of Grandma and this picture in particular caught everyones attention. Actually, once our Grandma Kaster was visiting our house and she took a look at a black and white picture sitting in a frame on a little table and asked when "that picture was taken of Tisha." She was shocked when we told her it was actually a picture of Grandma Slater. In 1940 Grandma Martha started working for Dr. Boyer at the Pawnee City Hospital as a nurse's aide for 3 1/2 years. During this time she helped deliver babies and kept a record of the ones she helped deliver and cared for. She was very porud of this book and would gladly drag it out and show anyone who was interested in seeing it. The clipping is from the local papers "letters to the Editor" section following Grandma's funeral and was written by one of the babies she helped deliver.

On February 9, 1944 She was married to Virgil D. Slater, at her Mother's home in Mission Creek, near Summerfield Kansas. To this family two sons were born, Cecil and Richard, and one daughter, Mildred "Millie". Not everyone knows that when my Mom was a little girl, Grandma had an allergic reaction to some medication she was on and her kidneys shut down. She was in hospital in Omaha for several months and they were not sure she'd pull though but she's always been a tough old bird. Anyway, Grandma and Grandpa made their home on a farm south of Pawnee City, until they moved to town on January 12, 1964. Grandma Martha and Grandpa Virgil always made time to get together with friends or relatives to play cards or Aggravation. They had so many card parties that they kind of meld together in my memory. I'd crawl under the table and play with a toy while they bid and argued. If I was quiet and down there long enough, I'd get to hear a dirty joke that Grandpa or one of the other men would tell. I can still hear them laughing and teasing each other. Between 1961 and 1967 Martha filled in at the school lunch room and she also worked at the Gordon Home, when they needed extra help. In 1966 she started working at the Pawnee Manor and continued there for 18 years, retiring in 1984. Grandpa Virgil's health started going downhill, so she cared for him until his death in May of 1987.
In March of 1993, she fell and severaly broke her ankle. At that time, she decided to check into the Pawnee Manor and make it her home. She whiled away her time, doing crossword puzzles, word searches, crocheting, making crafty things and helping the ladies by folding towels, peeling potatoes, or anything they needed help with. She really enjoyed her time at the Manor, kept busy, visited with everyone. Often, when I visited her...we'd check her out and pay a visit to some old card party friends or just drive around and look at how the town was changing. For many year she kept on the go, and wasn't slowed down until her mind started to fail her. Grandma had always had a memory for birthdates, full birth names, maiden names, when and where things had occured. Looking back now, it was amaizing how much she had locked away in that brain. Eventually she had trouble keeping her past and present seperate. There were times she swore that nobody told her that her Sister had passed away even though she had attended the funeral, or she still thought her Mother was alive, even though Great Grandma Olga passed away when I was 2 years old. It never bothered me that she would repeat herself over and over. I used it to my advantage. If she laughed at my comment the first time around, I'd try to get a bigger laugh the second or third time. She couldn't help it, and as long as she was happy, it didn't bother me.

My Memories of Grandma revolve around her floating back and forth between the kitchen and the dining room table where they played games. She'd have some kind of Oomp Pa pa music on the radio, lots of polka and strange Bohemian songs in languages I didn't know. She made the best Candied Sweet potatoes and knowing how much I liked those things, she'd make them no matter how warm it was out. She loved the color red. She had red dining room curtains and a red area rug. She had a crazy wall paper that had red in the design. At Christmas she hung big red bells in the windows that would light up. I wonder if that is part of the reason that my Mom (Grandma's daughter) dislikes red so much. Grandma had a collection of plates from many of the states she visited. I wish I would have kept them all but the only one I have is the one she got from Kentucky...the state I was born in. Ofcourse, I was supposed to get all the windchimes that hung in the doorways of their house. I used to run in circles through the house, jumping up and tapping the chimes as I went. My goal was to keep them ringing...always ringing. The chimes were unusual and were supposed to be put aside for me but were accidently sold when Grandma auctioned off her stuff when she decided to stay at the manor for good. When I hear the racket of chimes in the wind, I think of Grandma.
In the evenings, when the weather was clear, Grandma and Grandpa would sit in lawn chairs in the front yard. People would drive by and wave, some would stop by to chat. They knew everyone. To this day, on a hot, humid evening with the strong smell of freshly cut grass on the breeze, I can almost hear their voices and laughter again and it makes me want to spin around in circles until I'm so dizzy that I fall over and lay on my back in the cool grass, watching the trees and the clouds spin, while chiggers snack on me like I was a juicy desert. In some respects, that sums up Nebraska to me. When I step of the plane after being away for a long time, I feel that same joy, that same simple content feeling. That's what home feels like to me. It's a friendly, place filled with the people that I love and all the simple things in live that make life worth savoring. You have to be careful though or you will be eaten alive...lol.
I can tell you right now what went down as Grandma stepped across those pearly gates. Everyone was there to greet her. Family, Friends, all of her siblings, her parents, and husband... Grandpa Virgil in his striped overalls, even some of those pet dogs they had over the years. They laughed and chatted the hours away, saying things like, "Oh my, its been ages!", "You certainly took your sweet time getting here.", and "We've been waiting for you so we could get a game of cards going." They will ask how she's been. In typical Grandma fashion she will say, "Oh, I can't complain." Even though the last few years were very hard on her. She told them all that Mildred (my Mom) was with her when she passed and how much that meant to her. She told everyone that she lasted long enough to be able to see her first Great Grand child, Rue Carrington Kuhl, Tisha's baby. They will all agree that they need to keep an eye on that little girl, because she's going to be a real handful as she gets older. Then they all settled down to a long card party with breaks for snacks and laced with a story or two. You know, I have a funny feeling the cards are being shuffled and dealt out at this very moment. I have no doubt about it.

I was lucky. When I was born, I had all my Grandparents and two Great Grandparents still alive. I had many years with them. They are all gone now and Grandma Slater was the very last of them. I had 37 years with her. I'd say I was lucky indeed.

It sure snuck up on me....

I have a Blogaversary on April 9th! I should have posted some kind of contest. Hmmm. OK, here is what I'll do. Every time you leave a comment up until Midnight on April 9th, I will add your name to a drawing for some sort of prize. I don't even have an idea what I should give, but I will think of something. OK, just comment on anything...old posts, my 200 random things about me...you name it, it will count. The only catch is that it can't be some random thing you write...like saying hello, your comment must pertain to the post. If it reminds you of something you want to share, that's fine but you can't just comment with a phrase like this. "Here's another comment...add my name to the prize drawing again." That would annoy me.

Ready, Set...GO!

I have a reputation to uphold, huh!

I have caught so much flax for not pulling any gags on April Fools Day. Yes, its true that I do every year. I actually thought about doing something and had a few ideas but I decided it was more fun having Sam walk around all paranoid. Yes, that was a lot more fun than actually pranking him. Although, my critics will get a kick out of this story...

The next day, Sam poured himself a glass of his Lactaid milk and added his chocolate syrup for a little treat. He had grabbed one of the half gallons of milk and it was almost empty so he dumped all of it in the glass, then he grabbed the other container, which we all assumed was full because it was in the back. It turns out that it was almost gone too, but between the two cartons, he managed to get a full glass worth. Now, I always put the new containers of milk in the back and use the open one first...but other people in this house seem to find that basically impossible to do. They are so bad about using up one container before opening the next one....annoys me to no end. Anyway, I went downstairs to fold some clothes and call my Mom. While I was talking to Mom, Sam came down and asked me if I had done something to the milk and if it was a leftover April Fools Joke. I said no, I didn't do anything at all this year. To which he said, Oh, then I guess the milk was just bad. LOL, so that container in the back had gone bad even though Lactaid milk has a longer shelf life than regular milk. Poor kid, he thought I forgot about one of my boobie traps. The joke was on him...wasn't it!

Guess what I did tonight!

I attended the 1,174th LIVE Broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor as host at the Town Hall in NYC. So if you missed it, there will be a rebroadcast on Sunday at 11 AM on WNYC 820 AM. Besides Mr Keillor we were delighted by The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and might I add that they were wonderful. Tim Russell and Sue Scott played voices in the skits, which included the Guy Noir Detective skit while Fred Newman was the sound effects guy. Special Guest stars were Kimberly Williams-Paisley better known for her part as the Bride in the two Father of the Bride movies and married to one of the other guest performers, Brad Paisley. If you listen to country music, you know who he is. Might I add, that after seeing him preform in this venue, I'd see him in a concert in a heartbeat. If you don't know who he is, check out his latest album, 5th Gear on Arista Nashville. We also heard Jean Redpath, the Scottish folk singer and we heard the poetry of a local poet whose name is escaping me at the moment. I'm sure it will pop into my mind later.
Anyway, I had a great time and suggest that if you ever have the chance to catch a live broadcast of the show, that you do so. Don't hesitate...it was fun.

Oh yes, I remember that design!

I was skipping around the Internet looking for a future craft project. Can you ever really have to many plans for future projects? I think not...anyway, I happened across this Cross Stitch design that I have worked on in the past. I didn't buy the "Footprints in the Sand" X-stitch. Nope. I didn't start stitching. Nope. I sure finished it though. You see, back in the early 90's. My friend Michelle was taught how to cross stitch. I was there when she was shown how to do it, so naturally being the visual learner that I am...I peaked over their shoulders and learned a thing or two myself.
Anyway, Michelle bought this for her Grandma. She worked on it for quite a while and then she hit the wall, so to speak. She just didn't feel like she could complete it. The problem was that she had promised the piece to her Grandma. That is where I come in. Michelle suckered me into working on it for her. Now, you know you have to be a pretty good friend for me to agree to do all those back stitches for the letters. I hate doing those. Little X's are no big deal but I can't stand doing letters and outlining things. If I remember correctly, she was about 1/4 done with it, perhaps a little over that. I somehow managed to get it done. I'm pretty sure she gave it to her Grandma...but I'm not sure she shared the secret with her. lol, that's OK with me. All I know is that I have not worked on a X-stitch with so many words and back stitching since. I'm pretty sure I never will either.

What a dream!

I just got this email from my dear friend Tami. I have to post it on here. It's the craziest thing ever. You'll see what I mean...

"So I had the weirdest dream last night and you were in it. You were very mean to me! You were like the head of a carnival or something and you were sitting in a booth like the "fortune teller" and you kept insisting I owed you money. It was only like $7 but I refused to pay and you refused to let up so I finally paid you and we never spoke again.

No wonder I don't sleep well at night. (Maybe I should stop drinking the Baileys before bed.)

...Do I owe you any money?

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you I love you and hopefully, if we ever disagree, we can work it out before you have to become a carnie."

For the record: She doesn't owe me money. Unless you count friendship dues but she's paid up for the time being. lol...just kidding. I don't have any experience as a fortune teller, I have never worked as a carnie and don't intend to. I love you too Tami...so maybe you should give up the night cap. I mean, seriously, the booze is making me seem like a mean person.

Progress...it happens.

OK, so I should have all my blocks put together by class time on Monday. I just tossed some of my completed blocks on the ground to get a basic idea what its going to look like when I am done with it. It's not quite what I wanted but I like it anyway. It will look great at the foot of my bed.

I'd love to go to bed right now, but there is a quilt show coming on in about 25 minutes. I want to tape it. I know I will fall asleep during it, but that's OK, I can watch it another time. I'll just use it for my break time.

It's like Kosher Crack, really it is!

Well, crapola! Passover is just around the corner and that means the Manischewits Chocolate Chip Macarrons are on the grocery store shelves. That also means that I'm going to be shoving those suckers in my mouth, left and right. I love them. LOVE, yes LOVE them. OMG, they are addictive. I'm not kidding, they are kosher crack, except you don't snort them, smoke them or shoot them. Shoot they are cooked for you so all you have to do is shove them in your mouth, chew and savor every single bite. You know, while I was digging on the shelf, looking for the chocolate chip macaroons, I found myself wondering what I would do if there was one can left and a little old lady was reaching for it. I'm almost ashamed to say it, but I think I would knock her down and run off with that can. Don't look at me like that! Isn't that terrible! The funniest part about it is that I'm not even a coconut fan.

I'm not telling....yet.

Marianne thinks my quotes are obscure. Wha! Huh! I totally remember them from the movies. I could just tell you the titles but what fun is that. I think I will add to it. I'll post some more dialog for the ones that nobody figured out. Did you really think I would be that easy? No comments from the peanut gallery! Let's be civilized ladies and gentleman. Fine! Just humor me for a few minutes.

If it has not been solved already, I will post an additional quote after the original one that I posted.

1) ALREADY SOLVED "Miss Kelly, perhaps you'd like this flower. I seem to have misplaced my buttonhole." (Harvey~ Millie, aka Mom)

2) "I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness and a little looking out for the other fella, too."
Second Quote: Person #1: "Mr. President, will the Senator yield?" Person #2: "Will the Senator yield?" Person #3: "No, sir, I'm afraid not, no sir. (Mr Smith Goes To Washington~ Raine)

3) "My father used to say that if we ever had the money you have, we would eat steak and ice cream three times everyday."

Second Quote:

You know what today is!

A fool is better liked for his folly,
than a wise man for his wisdom,
So
why not be a little foolish today;
Of all the creatures that creep, swim or
fly,
Peopling the earth, waters and the sky,
From Rome to Iceland, Paris
to Japan,
I really think, the greatest fool is man …

– Nicholas
Boileau Despreaux (1630-1711)

You know, I really love this day. I drove Sam to school today and told him to make sure he got someone today before he came home. He looked at me funny and I said, "Today is April Fools Day." He answered with, "You haven't tricked me yet today." I told him I wasn't going to this year. Not because I'm not really going to do it...its just that I don't have any plans to. You never really know with me. Some of my best pranks are last minute strokes of genius. I'm not sure he believed me anyway...and perhaps the best joke is having him wait all day for a prank that doesn't happen. Yes, I know...I'm evil. I can't help it, its genetic.

It's Quilting Time People!

Oh yes, it seems as though I'm learning a new skill. Guess what! It's going to be an expensive addiction too, I can tell already. I have my strips done for half the blocks of my Double Irish Chain Quilt. All I have to do now is use my handy old rotary cutter and turn them into mini 2 1/2 inch strips. No problem. I think this weekend I'm going to cut and sew and cut again the strips for the larger blocks that I have to make. I'm waiting until I'm in class to sew everything together in blocks though. Even at this rate, I'm ahead of the other gals in my class. One of them was having a terrible time cutting strips. It's not that hard...maybe she's a spaz. Spaz or not, shes a sweet friendly lady with a great sense of humor about her issues with the rotary cutter. I told her it was like cutting pizza and she said she uses scissors to cut pizza. I must have looked at her funny because she started laughing and I said, "There is no hope for you. You better pack up and go home." That really cracked her up. I love people that you can joke around with and the get that its a joke.
I'm hauling my sewing machine to class next Monday because I really cant stand the machine that I had to use at my station on Wens. Oh Dear Lord that machine was bad. It had one speed, which was super fast. I'd have to push the foot thingy all the way down before it would go and then it WWWEEEEENNNNNNTTTTT so darn fast I almost threw my shoulder out. Plus I don't want to look like an idiot because I can't thread that machine. I only know how to thread the one that my Mom bought me because its super easy. I think its the machine featured in the Idiots guide to Sewing machines...lol, just kidding.
I'll post more pics as my quilt evolves.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

"Brother Cuthburt was usually to be found here, for his job did not leave him much time for services, which suited his inclination: he was a clever down-to-earth fellow with little interest in the spiritual life. The cellarer was the material counterpart of the sacrist: Cuthburt had to provide for all the monks' practical needs, gathering in the produce of the monastery's farms and granges and going to market to buy what the monks and their employees could not provide themselves. The job required careful forethought and calculation."

Guess Who's 50 today...followed by sad news...

Uncle Lonnie, that's who...and he still looks the same. Giggle, snort, lol. Aunt Vickie and I put an ad in the paper for his birthday. It contained this picture. Oh, Dear Lord, he looked like a dork...kind of still does. I say that with nothing but love. His wife, otherwise known as my Aunt Deanna....well she wasn't a happy camper when I spoke to her last night. Nope. She has caught a lot of hell over that picture in the paper...even though the ad said that it was placed by Lonnies "younger sister", cough, cough....RRRRRighttt, whatever..."and her partner in crime...Don't know? Just A.S.K." So basically, that tells you it was Vickie and his little ole niece. My initials spell ASK. Anyway, he thinks she gave us that picture. I told her that for the right amount of money we might actually tell him that she had nothing to do with it. I won't do it for free...hell, it cost us to put the ad in the paper. I'll tell the truth if it means I will get my investment back. Yes, I am evil that way. I've already been told that I better watch my back. I'm not to worried. I have 26 months before I turn 40 and I told her I was leaving the country for that birthday. I don't think she believed me. It's so true....I want to take a trip. I'm thinking France in the spring would be nice...or maybe I will go tropical. Anyone that wants to help me celebrate my big 40th can. Start saving money now. I'll let you know where we can meet up. Hmmm...maybe Egypt. I could blow out a candle on a cupcake from the base of a pyramid. That could be cool, unless its windy. I don't want to eat a cupcake that has sand on it.

On a sadder note, Grandma Martha passed away yesterday morning. I fly home on Wensday for the funeral on Friday. It was time for her to pass. She was fighting it but her condition was pretty bad. She couldn't really communicate anymore, she had trouble eating and drinking. Her quality of life was a big fat zero, she was all skin and bones...her skin was so thin. Yep, she was 92 and would have been 93 in April. That's a nice long life. I have some fun stories to share about her...but I can't now. I have to much to do to get ready for my flight home.

It's her birthday...

...and she'll cry if she wants to. My cousins daughter is celebrating her birthday today. Yep, she's 16. I sent her present already and its been killing her not to open in. Ah, yes, but she knows that I am evil that way. I actually teased her and said I was going to post an old pic of her. I would have but she got lucky. Our scanner isn't working right. Talk about great birthday gifts...lol, she should be excited about that.

I need help..

I am so sick of the same old supper, night after night. Does anyone have any good recipes that they could send my way? I'm talking about stuff you have made many times and loved. Yeah, don't you dare try to pass off something that you found online and have not tried. I don't want to be your test monkey. I need to shake things up around here or I'm going to loose my mind.

Where have I been? Well...

I have had a bit of the Winter Blahs. Don't worry, its not contagious. However, just incase...I decided to make sure I wasn't passing them on to anyone else by not blogging. I just didn't feel that I had anything to say. Well, not anything positive or funny. It seems like the last month and a half have been full of sad things, not just for me but for some of my dearest friends as well. It's hard to be happy go lucky when your friends are upset and hurting. I just needed a break to catch my second wind.
I was told today that I need to blog. I think I do too. I'm going to start posting again. I'm also going to start crafting again. I need to get use to the fact that Spring isn't going to be here for a while and I'm going to have to make my own warm weather feeling. I may have to hit the booze and sit to close to my table lamp. Hey, those suckers build up some heat.

Consider yourself warned!

Netter is back!

Pray for my Aunts speedy recovery....

Dear Lord, I swear! I was just thinking the other night, how quiet things have been in our family. Now this happens. Some guys robbed the Pizza Hut that my Aunt works at. They went in 10 minutes before closing with guns and ski masks. ACtually, you can read the story in the paper by clicking on the hyperlink above.

There were three gals working. A young high school girl, my Aunt and the manager who happens to be the mother of one of my h.s. classmates. My Aunt and the Manager are in the hospital...beaten to a pulp. The doctors are waiting for the swelling to go down to see how badly the bone around her eye socket is broken. Her nose is a mess too. My cousin told me that her Mom just remembers her head being slammed against the ceramic tile floor over and over again.

Why the hell those jerks had to beat them is beyond me. They handed over the money right away and they did everything they were told to do. They laid down on the floor when they said to...grrr. Plus, It sounds like they walked into it thinking only one person was there. My Aunts car was parked there, but the other ladies were dropped off. I'd put good cash on it that it was a bunch of dumb ass druggies. I hope they catch them and lock their butts up. Personally, I think they need to be locked away for life...but they have to catch them first.

Linda will be in the hospital for a few days. She doesn't have health insurance right now...Does workmans comp cover being beaten by theives while you are on the clock? I sure hope so.

I just hate that this has happened to her. She's had a tough life. Why is it that it seems to pour on some people and while others live charmed lives. It bites. It really does.

When life gives you snow....you make...

Yes, when life hands you snow, you make snowmen. Unless your sleds are easily accessable, which ours are not. Oh and you make snow angels, but not until you are so cold you can't stand it anymore...otherwise you will never finish the snowman. Yes, while Cliff and Sam built this bad boy, Nancy scooped the rest of the driveway. I only scooped a path for the painter and mailman to get to the house and I did the sidewalk so I could find the papers under all that white stuff. Yep, I stayed inside and gave them directions on how to improve thier snowman. The orange eyes were my idea.

It snowed...whooptie do....and it its still snowing...

I wish I could say that I woke up to this crap this morning, however the truth is that I drove in it between 1:00 and 2:30AM. I had to pick Sam and Nancy up from JFK. Their flight had been delayed and when I left the house at 1 AM, it had just started snowing. It was fine snow but very moist. I was OK until I got through Rockville Centre and then Sunrise Hwy was sliiiick. I went, at the most, 25 miles per hour the rest of the way to JFK. On the Belt Parkway a guy in a SUV passed me like a freakin' freight train. A little later, I passed him along the side of the road. He had tried to change lanes to go to JFK also and had slid across the Parkway and hit the guard rail. I wish I could say that it was the first and last accident I passed. Nope, there were several more. People just don't know how to drive in snow out here. You'd think they would. I guess its just a matter of them forgetting that snow can be slick in the most unlikely places. Hence we saw a three car pile up as we left the airport, another car slid off the Belt Parkway, hit a light pole, knocking it completely over and then went through a chain link fence only to face the wrong way and blocking part of the entrance ramp to the service road. There were three more along Sunrise Hwy. I'm from Nebraska...so I was fine. I was more worried about people playing pinball and hitting me.
Needless to say, we got home unscathed, but I tossed and turned in bed until 5:15 AM. I think after the stress of watching all those freaks play bumper car, I was to geared up to sleep, I got up at 7AM and scooped a path in the driveway, in case Georg (he's Greek...that is how he spells his name) the painter shows up...if he shows up. Sam's going to be pissed. The only real snow we've had this year and there is no school because of break...he's been dying for a snow day, poor kid.
I feel like I need a nap.

Oh Happy Day...from me to you...

Happy Valentine's Day to you! Enjoy your day, eat Chocolate, smell some flowers. Oh and a very Happy Birthday to Kelley. Was it really 18 years ago today that I drove to Lincoln in all that slush to see Michelle and her new little baby girl? Goodness!
